Some Foundation Grants have limitations, because they are available in just one or a few States only, or follow an annual cycle. This can be a problem when an urgent need arises for a School Grant. Check these ones out for the greatest degree of flexibility.

– ABB (USA) is part of a huge internationally based supplier of automation and power systems that in total employs 115,000 people in over 100 countries. They use their core strengths of a corporate pioneering spirit and leadership in technology to help their customers become more efficient while also lowering their environmental footprint. As might be expected, ABB (USA) has a social conscience that expresses itself in school grants.

The ABB commitment to building local neighborhoods is a core value among all ABB USA employees. Every year, they support a wide range of community initiatives with gifts of their skills, time and money too. Locally based ABB (USA) employees assist with the decision process because they know what is good for their own hometowns. ABB USA assist with activities as diverse a student mentoring, sports programs and the upkeep of walking and cycling paths. Find your nearest ABB (USA) office by visiting http://www.abb.us/ and clicking on the where to find us link.

- The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics – or AIAA for short – has 31,000 members and is the largest professional society in the world. Its remit is fostering scientific engineering progress in aviation, space exploration and defense, and it expresses this in awards and grants as well.

The AIAA Foundation is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization with the objective of devoting attention and resources to the education of the next generation of aerospace professionals. It supports school programs by providing financial assistance, professional mentoring and research opportunities, and recognizing outstanding individual contributions too. The AIAA also seeks out classroom opportunities that make science fun.

A K-12 teacher with an interest in mathematics, science or technology may qualify for a grant, and may spend the money on demonstration kits, classroom science supplies or other related materials. The AIAA also provides scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students – these can be as much as $2,500 and $10,000 respectively. Find out more at http://www.aiaa.org/content.cfm?pageid=699

- Since 1952, the Allstate Foundation has been helping Americans achieve their hopes and dreams through connective programs that drive social change. Their efforts include literally thousands of programs that help individuals achieve rewarding, safer lives through overcoming their personal challenges and doubts.

The Allstate Foundation is involved in interventions like these in PK-12 Schools:

•	Diversity, Tolerance and Inclusion: Programs that impart a sense of tolerance among youth, discriminatory thinking and reduce hate-related crime.

•	Community Safety and Re-Vitalization: Programs to reduce violence during and after school, and rebuild neighborhoods

•	Economic Empowerment: Programs that impart economic literacy, and also provide practical mentoring in matters of personal finance and insurance.

The ABB (USA), AIAA and Allstate Foundation each make their own unique contributions to empowering people through foundation grants to schools and students. This article is part of a longer series that explains interests that other foundations also have in School Grants.

There are numerous private school grants available today, and they’re accessible on the internet to many students who qualify for them. The trick to making successful applications for funding grants at independent schools is to apply for a program grant from a grant foundation that matches your own personal circumstances best. So, take your time researching what is available, target the one that you feel most confident about, and give it your best shot.

The secret to applying for anything – be it a school grant, student loan or part-time job – is to understand exactly what’s on offer, and then present yourself in the most appropriate light. For example, many private education grants are offered by firms or individuals with a social conscience. If you have done voluntary work before, then this could just be the time to roll this information out.

Although the wide variety of grants for schools available can at first be confusing, you’ll soon discover that free school grants distil into several categories. Before you start, be careful of sites that charge an up-front registration fee – these charges may be the only income that they make, in which case you could become their donor.

Federal funding grants are great because you can use them to pay off any costs of attending school, and, like other grants, you don’t have to reimburse the Government either. Success depends on how badly you need the cash, meaning that if Daddy has a Mercedes Coupe and an Ocean Going Yacht you could be wasting time. The main thing to watch out for is the Expected Family Contribution part of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form – you need to fill this in honestly, while at the same time knowing that existing financial support is what makes or breaks applications for funding grants like these. Once approved, the neat thing is that the Federal grants foundation can either pay your provider, or deposit the money to your bank account

Other grants programs include Educational Opportunity Grants from funds that your school may have set aside. Although these are limited and quickly spent, a visit to the School Board office could be worth the trouble if you’re struggling. The principle remains the same. Those who don’t ask are assumed not to want and never get. Assuming they’re sympathetic down at the office, grab the forms and fill them in while you’re still there. If your grades are good, you’ll stand a better chance for this type of private student grant.

Awarding Grants are grant programs of a different kind. In this instance the funds are provided to the family, not the child, and don’t necessarily cover all tuition expenses. Like other free school grants they don’t need to be repaid – however awarding grants are funded from a school’s budget, and may not be available. Again, good marks and school behaviour come in handy.

Merit Awards are like free internal scholarships that private students get for exceptional academic achievements or outstanding talent. These grants for schools are seldom advertised against a budget – your teachers will know more.

Some of the best private schools also offer what are known as Sibling Discounts. Although not quite of the caliber of buy-one-get-one-free, they can nevertheless make a handy difference when family finances are going through hard times.

A variety of grant programs are available. Federal funding grants can be researched on the internet. Grants by schools are best applied for directly. All grants are aimed at assisting the financially disadvantaged – to be successful a record of past effort is required too. There is a tide in all our affairs that can lead us on to fortune. Why don’t you investigate the possibilities and apply for one of the private school grants today? This could be the beginning of a whole new future. Here are a few places to get you started:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Free Application for Federal Student Aid

http://ed.gov/programs/fpg/

Pell Grants

http://www2.ed.gov/programs/fseog/index.html
