A grant is a gift, usually from the government, to help you pay school fees. The government does not give money away to people who already have it. This means that you need to be in some form of financial difficulty before you apply.

There are several different grant programs in operation. Each of these has different objectives in mind. Grants Based on Merit
While the government awards some education grants in terms of greatest financial need, it also has programs to uplift successful students. Many corporations will also help in this way – these are the main merit-based federal programs:

The Robert C Byrd Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards exceptionally successful high school seniors with their post-secondary education. To qualify for college expenses apply to your State Education Agency.

The National Science Scholars Program was established to assist students further their studies in the physical, life and computer science arenas. To be eligible you must be already scheduled to graduate from a private or public school, and have demonstrated outstanding academic competence in a science subject. Grants Based on Economic Need

The Federal Pell Grant Program is an umbrella program that provides need-based school grants mainly to low-income undergraduate students, but also to postgraduate students too. These grants may only be spent at one of the 5,400 educational institutions participating, and are adjusted according to the applicants expected family contribution.

The Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership also focuses on post secondary students. It provides funding to States to help them provide educational grants based on need, and also assists work-study students. Again, apply to your State Education Agency.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants provide need-based assistance to low-income undergraduate students. These are obtainable from one of 4,000 post-secondary institutions. Students with exceptional needs receive priority, and the actual amount of the grant is discretionary as decided upon by the participating school.

The American government offers a number of different educational grants to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Some of these are based on merit, and some on financial need.
